Can science make your run faster, healthier and more fun, of course. ETH Zurich –one of the leading international universities for technology and the natural sciences – is showcasing innovation by Swiss running shoe brand On during the Zürich Meets New York. ETH are presenting information about “the science of running shoes” at this Arts & Science event on May 18-19. Sports Techie community blog readers, runners and everyday walkers worldwide should know that EZH is known as the M.I.T of Zurich where the Swiss On running shoe was invented by an ETH engineer and tested in ETH research. David Allemann, Casper Coppetti, Olivier Bernhard are the company co-Founders. If you want cushioned landings and barefoot takeoffs, On shoes are made for you because although we are born to run barefoot, it was not to run on hard surfaces.
On
On reinvented the running shoe to put your one step ahead of evolution. On was termed revolutionary by The Wall Street Journal. More than five World Champions, including Olympic Gold Medalist Nicola Spirig and the current Ironman World Champion Frederik Van Lierde, have won international competitions wearing the On. On is currently the fastest growing running brand in the U.S. an impressive sportsbiz feat. Their award-winning design and their innovative cushioning system that make running like it should be for the body and the eye alike. While a conventional running shoe sends a high, visible impact from the forefoot through the ankle into the calf, those shoes equipped with On CloudTec® cushioning shows no visible impact on the body.
Tech The secret behind the revolutionary On shoes is their CloudTec and its dual functionality: land soft as on sand yet push off hard as from the running track. Hollow pods on the sole of the shoe stretch back on impact to cushion the landing and then lock to form the solid foundation required for a powerful push-off. The result is a new running experience: fast, light and agile. Science A scientific study by ETH measured a lower heart rate and reduced lactic acid build up with the Swiss running shoes On. A group of 40 well-trained runners took part in the broad study at ETH, which showed that, on average, while treadmill running in the On, their heart rate was reduced by 2 beats per when minute measured against their heart rate while running in their favorite running shoe. It also revealed the lactate acid concentration in their blood was reduced, on average, by 5.4%. The differences are statistically significant. Caroline Steffen is a triathlon champion

How does On’s patented CloudTec® system work? Cushioned landing, firm push-off: that’s the core concept behind the new running shoe by On, the young Swiss-based manufacturer. It’s a radical development: On’s patented technology combines all the benefits of a soft training shoe and a hard and fast racing shoe. The secret to this bold new dual functionality lies in the On’s “clouds” – hollow pods on the sole of the shoe that stretch back on impact to cushion the landing and then lock to form the solid foundation required for a powerful push-off. The On gives its wearers all the benefits of a natural running style, while still providing optimum comfort and maximum protection from injury. Athletes who have worn Ons and their coaches have reported greater muscle activation, new personal bests, fewer injuries and shorter recovery times. These findings are also backed up by scientific research: independent studies by Switzerland’s reputed Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich have confirmed that the patented CloudTec® system substantially reduces athletes’ heart rates and blood lactate levels. Equipped with On’s unique and patented CloudTec® system, the new On Cloudsurfers remain as light and agile as ever, and as effective as ever in converting running energy into forward momentum, both in training and in competition. That’s because the On is a running shoe which blends what no traditional running shoe has ever managed to combine: a soft sand-like landing and the kind of explosive pushoff that is usually only experienced on a genuine running track. The new On Cloudsurfer has also undergone some technical modifications to make it even better. The rubber formula used to make the unique CloudTec® sole has been further enhanced to ensure minimum wear and maximum shoe life. And the smart-foam net lining has been specifically designed to fit the wearer’s foot for optimum comfort and humidity control. “The adaptive sole balances every pace and truly trains the running muscles,” explains Olivier Bernhard, the multiple Ironman champion and co-founder of On. “The On Cloudsurfer really does encourage its wearer to adopt a more efficient running style and greater body stability. And the new color combinations will just increase everyone’s desire to get into those training sessions!” Nicola Spirig is an Olympic Gold Medalist
