First up on the Monumental Sports Network is the Mystics season opener on Tuesday, May 14 against the New York Liberty. Remaining games will be broadcast nationally on CBS, ESPN, and ION Television. Look for a new magazine show showcasing all things Mystics. The Sports Techie community blog is happy to report fans in the greater DC region can watch games via linear tv or streaming via a Pay TV subscription, or else sign up for a direct-to-consumer (DTC) membership with MNMT. Fans, get excited for the debut of Aailyah Edwards, forward, UConn, after her selection with the number 6 pick in the first round of the draft. The two-time All-American is projected to be a possible double-double player any given game. The Mystics were the 2023 WNBA Playoffs seventh seed only to lose to the Liberty.

“Building off an incredible few months for women’s basketball, we are delighted to provide sports fans in the DMV region a platform to watch the world’s top players on a regular basis,” said Friday Abernethy, General Manager, Monumental Sports Network. “Our network has made a concerted effort to promote women’s sports across a variety of leagues and levels, from high school to the pros, and we can’t wait for the upcoming WNBA season to begin.”

New this season, Monumental Sports Network will produce a Mystics-focused monthly magazine show that features the best behind-the-scenes moments and off-court stories with players, staff, and Mystics fans. MNMT is proud to be the leader in WNBA telecasts by continuing to offer Mystics gameday programs – Mystics Pregame Live and Mystics Postgame Live – to provide informative team analysis and commentary for 30 minutes before and after each game on the network. Both programs will be broadcast live from MNMT’s recently opened state-of-the-art broadcast studios, with Wes Hall returning as host and Chasity Melvin returning as the primary analyst. Last season, the Mystics became the first WNBA team to feature a dedicated pre and postgame show for every regional game broadcast.

The Mystics game broadcast booth will feature University of Maryland Hall of Famer Christy Winters-Scott, who returns for her 15th season as color analyst for the Mystics, and play-by-play announcer Meghan McPeak, who enters her sixth season with the team.

In August 2022, Monumental Sports & Entertainment acquired full ownership of NBC Sports Washington from Comcast/NBC Universal. The station was rebranded Monumental Sports Network in September 2023 with a new slate of programming. In November, Monumental Sports Network announced partnerships with several local universities to air 50 men’s and women’s college basketball games on the network during the 2023-24 season. The network also broadcasts live college football, college volleyball, boys and girls high school basketball, esports, and recently announced a slate of Washington Spirit (NWSL) and Old Glory DC (Major League Rugby) games airing this spring and summer.

Single game tickets for the 2024 Washington Mystics season are currently on sale at washingtonmystics.com.

Sports Techie, are you getting enough women sports? Female and now male fans, are wanting more live games and content which is what Monumental Sports Network are offering together with the Mystics to meet this highly contagious need.

The regional sports networks (RSNs) business model is being forced to pivot especially after Diamond Sports filed for Chapter bankruptcy protection last year. The DTC offering by MNMT seems to be the next evolution for fans to consume video streams, as well as receiving broadcasts via the old rabbit ear, antennae’s, which are much improved with digital capabilities, yet still offered for free by the likes of the Phoenix Suns.

However you tune into the Mystics for the 2024 season on Monumental Sports Network this summer, be sure to try and also make it to the Entertainment and Sports Arena to support the team in person.
