Tennis Players Social Media Popularity – Infographic

Tennis players love social media because they get to engage with followers via their Facebook fan page and Twitter handles about their game, sponsors and loyal or new fans. The Sports Techie community blog has discussed this tennis topic in the past so it comes as no surprise that Rafael Nadal from Spain is the clear cut men’s tour leader while the world’s top ranked Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) player perhaps ever, Serena Williams from the U.S. takes a back seat to Russian Maria Sharapova on facebook but not twitter. What does this all mean? Perhaps tennis has a ways to go in worldwide social popularity compared to soccer player Christiano Ronaldo on Real Madrid who has an amazing 107,108,444 likes on facebook but further sports technology analysis is required to sort it all out.

Professional Tennis Is Social

Pro Tennis Social Media Breakdown
Aging Swiss veteran Roger Federer is the game’s best male ambassador and comes in at number two on the sport list. The top ranked Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) men’s player is currently Serbian Novak Djokovic but his social metrics are not a reflection of his dominance on the court since he trails Rafa, Federer and Sharapova.

Another obvious fact is official world rankings and social media are not an exact science when measuring popularity. Victoria Azarenka hails from the country of Belarus and claims a no. 31 WTA rank but has earned a top ten social following according to the table, with in excess of a million international facebook fans.

Is facebook better than twitter for tennis superstars? Not really, it depends on factors like content subject matter, tournament location and human interaction. Twitter is much better tech for direct communication with a fan base while facebook is best for amassing constituents.

One thing I have voiced to our social media network is the amount of fake followers on both platforms as well as across Google, LinkedIn and Instagram. You can literally buy followers to make it look as if your follower numbers are large but reality is many are generated by companies out of India, Europe and here in America that provide hundreds to thousands of fake people as a pay service.

Ana Ivanovic is a Serbian national with three million facebook fans but only 358,000 twitter followers. Perhaps her social media marketing company wants that kind of ratio but something tells me they would rather be more balanced. Romanian Simona Halep is the best case study to consider because she has just over 7,000 twitter followers of her handle but more than one million facebook fans.

For now, these two social channel are free to use but should the almighty facebook one day start charging to use it these women best drive twitter numbers up since I cannot see them going to a pay business model anytime soon.

The UK is social media friendly and the number one British player is Andy Murray, a positive reflection of his three million followers per platform, which is something sponsors like.

The 2015 Australian Open has already been played. Next up is the French Open in Paris, then comes Wimbledon in London and finally the US Open in New York City. So load your mobile devices with new pro tennis players you want to follow, download apps that put you in social contact with them and root on your favorite player to tour and Grand Slam wins.

See y’all later in Seattle and here in Atlanta.
