Spread the Word about the American Century Championship
American Century Investments, NBC Sports, and the 2014 American Century Championship are partnering with the Sports Techie community blog to celebrate the 25th anniversary edition of this celebrity golf event, which will bring sports legends and celebrities such as Charles Barkley, Annika Sorenstam, Aaron Rodgers, Kevin Nealon and Ray Romano to play for charity in Edgewood Tahoe from July 15, 2014 to July 20, 2014.
American Century Championship
The championship will be televised live today on NBC Sports Network and NBC July 19-20. We are all taking social media to another level in order to fight cancer. In honor of the late Jim Stowers Jr., the founder of American Century Investments and the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, I am asking for your help in spreading the word about American Century Investment’s dedication towards helping the advancement of medical research for gene-based diseases. I joined the Profits with a Purpose Team in order to share information, entertainment and fun across your social networks.
Each year, more than 40% of American Century Investments’ profits are distributed to the Institute. Since 2000, total dividend payments to the Institute have exceeded $1 billion. This year, the Institute is also the official national beneficiary of the 2014 tournament. You can learn more about American Century and the Stowers Institute here.
Cancer touches generations but like those affected one way or the other, it cannot take the kids out of us, Rodgers or Jerry Rice, living NFL superstars youth role models.
The following hashtags, #ACCgolf and #GiveLikeJim are active, full of life giving info and ways to be part of this cancer fighting initiative. Each hashtag also has fun and silly content because laughter does the body and mind good, like the funny comedians at Saturday Night Live understand so well.
This post was created in partnership with American Century Investments. I have received compensation for this post. However, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Sports Techie, I enjoyed being part of Citi Every Step of the Way program during the Sochi Olympics and am honored to be able to spread the word and raise awareness for this important cause to end cancer.

One in three people will be affected by cancer in a lifetime. Right before our family move from Seattle to Atlanta at the beginning of July, a friend and soccer teammate since sixth grade named Audi Edwards, who I spent time with at his work learning about nutrition and interacted with him on Facebook, died fighting cancer. I was invited to the funeral this week but cannot attend but am there in spirit and heartfelt prayers. My heart goes out to his girls, wife and family, and friends and work colleagues.
My Father had prostate cancer years ago as many men will go through too. Because of smart treatment involving early detection, radiation seeds and medicines, his PSA is back to an acceptable level and he lives on as Sports Techie Grandpa to his grandkids. Women are prone to breast, uterine and other body specific cancers. No matter the gender, race or age, we are all in this fight together, including animals.
My advice is to clean up your lifestyle and make cancer your lifetime opponent who you have scouted, game planned against, and executed flawlessly to a tee, on a daily basis. Our planet’s environment is changing rapidly for the worse in many areas; people’s diets are not cancer fighting and being sedentary is cancer’s lifeblood.
So, pay attention to the outside and inside world in which you, your family and friends, all live in. Eat more fruits and vegetables and more lean meats. Finally, as a global Sports Techie, get off your rear ends as much as possible and go get active. Playing 18 holes of golf and carrying your own bags are steps in the right direction. If you hit the 19th hole be aware of fried and salty foods, and excesses alcohol.
Blog Dedication
RIP Audi. I dedicate this blog to you, my Uncle Bill who drove across America with me at 79-years-old delaying his since then successful lip cancer treatment from too much sun exposure raising horses in Florida and Costa Rica, and to Jim Stowers Jr..
Blogging is as my small way of living with the glass half full. I feel fortunate being able to be a part of the incredibly dedicated teams at American Century Investments and the Stowers Institute for Medical Research who plan to win the fight against cancer for all people and pets.
If you care to share your own or someone you knows cancer story below as a blog comment or across the Sports Techie social media network, I will read them all and do what I can for as are the curator of our caring and conscious community via a response or tweet.
Sir Charles, please go get a golf swing analysis, lol.
