Why Winter Hydration Matters Direct Responses From Donna Martin, RDN, and Member of PLEZi’s Kitchen Cabinet
Winter is near and hydration is key to cold weather sports and activity performance, recovery, and wellness. The Sports Techie community blog offers you these cold-weather health habits via direct responses from Donna Martin, RDN, and member of PLEZi’s Kitchen Cabinet. She graciously shared her health profession insights as a Registered Dietician Nutritionist on why hydration remains essential during the colder months—and how wellness professionals are emphasizing its importance year-round. She highlights the importance of hydration during the colder months, and how PLEZi Hydration helps achieve these goals. As the weather cools, it’s easy to forget about hydration—but health experts say staying hydrated is just as important in fall and winter as it is in the summer, especially if you’re active, traveling, sedentary, or putting in long days. Seven months ago, Public Benefit Company, co-founded by Mrs. Michelle Obama, announced that PLEZi Nutrition and Stephen Curry formed a strategic partnership together with his wife, Ayesha Curry, as co-founders and brand ambassadors, with the intent to disrupt the sports hydration industry with delicious flavor, purposeful ingredients with no added sugar, and nutrients your active or resting body needs via PLEZI Hydration. It was my honor to be included in the ‘first sip campaign’ and receive a cool looking sip kit that included the three PLEZI flavors — Lemon Lime, Tropical Punch, and Orange Mango Twist. Each big flavor was tasty, definitely helped with hydration, and leaves you wanting more to satisfy your thirst, no matter the sport or calendar season.

The Sports Techie Questions:
1. Explain the hydration benefits PLEZi Hydration provides during the cold winter season
When temperatures drop, I remind people that hydration doesn’t take a holiday. Even though we tend to feel less thirsty in the winter, our bodies still lose fluids through dry indoor air and heating systems – and if we’re active, we also lose electrolytes. PLEZi Hydration* provides 2× the electrolytes of the average leading sports hydration drink plus 7× more potassium – a nutrient many people don’t get enough of – while cutting sodium in half. This smart balance helps maintain fluid levels and optimal performance, even when cold, dry air makes dehydration easy to overlook.
2. What are the most important wellness benefits PLEZi Hydration provides?
For me, PLEZi Hydration stands out for its balanced approach to hydration. It offers 500 mg of potassium and about half the sodium of typical sports drinks, supporting proper fluid movement into cells. I also love that there’s no added sugar – PLEZi Hydration gets its natural sweetness from real juice, with only about 12 grams of sugar per 16.9 oz bottle, compared to nearly double that in most sports drinks. This means hydration without sugar crashes. Add in the full daily value of vitamin C for immune and recovery support during winter, and you’ve got a drink that’s as functional as it is flavorful. With real fruit juice and no artificial colors or sweeteners, it tastes great – making it easier to drink more and stay hydrated.
3. Why do wellness professionals recommend hydration during colder weather whether you are physically active, traveling or sedentary?
No matter what my day looks like – working out, traveling, or spending time indoors, I’ve learned that staying hydrated in cold weather is essential. When we’re active, even in winter, we’re still losing fluids through sweat and breathing, and without replacing them, we risk fatigue and cramping. PLEZi Hydration provides targeted electrolytes and vitamin C to support recovery and energy.
For the travelers, dry cabin air, extra caffeine, and schedule changes can quickly lead to dehydration. Keeping PLEZi Hydration on-hand helps maintain alertness and immune strength on the go.
Even indoors, central heating can be surprisingly dehydrating. Even if we’re not sweating, low-grade dehydration can affect the body’s focus, mood, skin, and immunity. PLEZi Hydration offers hydration, electrolytes, and vitamin C in one refreshing bottle – making it easy to feel hydrated, no matter the season

Sports Techie, whether you believe in the science behind climate change or not, cold, snowy and icy super storms, artic freezes, and atmospheric rivers, are all coming this winter, depending on where you live across the globe. Whether you are in an El Nino or a La Nina year, that is coming too. The latter is predicted for December 2025-through February 2026, when the north part of the U.S. has colder and more stormy weather, while here in the south, it tends to be warmer and drier. Even though it is not yet winter, tomorrow in Georgia will set a record high temperature for November 20. Be ready for all types of weather and hydrate.
Hydration is also backed by science. Drinking 8 glasses of water a day is simply not the right way to do it, even though it does serve as a basic guideline. Factors like your age, weight and cardiovascular level, affect your hydration needs, as well as your workout types, intensity levels, and conditions such as sport, terrain and weather conditions. Being prepared for cold weather fitness and wellness needs are important just like it is also important to wear proper apparel and hydrate with the best and healthiest fluids.
As Mrs. Martin says, “No matter what my day looks like – working out, traveling, or spending time indoors, I’ve learned that staying hydrated in cold weather is essential. When we’re active, even in winter, we’re still losing fluids through sweat and breathing, and without replacing them, we risk fatigue and cramping. PLEZi Hydration provides targeted electrolytes and vitamin C to support recovery and energy.”
Steph and Martin believe in PLEZI Hydration, and so do I.
Be sure to tell the Curry’s and Mrs. Obama, you believe too.
