Nothing But A Winner Sports Documentary Deep Dives Into Alabama Football Legacy

‘Roll Tide!’ Comes to the Big Screen – ‘Nothing But A Winner’ Film Chronicles The Rise of the University of Alabama’s Legendary Football Dynasty

Nationwide Theatrical Release with Fathom Entertainment, Exec. Produced by Marlon Humphrey, Highlights Lasting Impact of Championship Coaches on College Football Landscape; Personal Development, Opportunities for Athletes of all Backgrounds

College football fans, get ready for Nothing But A Winner, a new documentary film about the rise of Alabama football, releasing in theaters exclusively on one night, July 31, via Fathom Entertainment. The film depicts what many call the greatest college football program in the sports’ storied history. One of the most famous cheers in all of sport, ‘Roll Tide’, is now synonymous with a National Championship mentality fostered during the greatest run in modern memory under legendary Coach Nick Saban, with the origin story of this culture of winning pioneered by Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. The Sports Techie community blog moderator (me) actually influenced Coach Saban before his run at ‘Bama while he was the Michigan State University Head Coach. I tried to sell him the GridIron 2000 by Sports 2000, an expert game planning system, co-developed by the Seattle Seahawks, back in the 1997/98 season knowing neither his coaching staff, nor any other collegiate program or NFL franchise had seen such a technologically advanced game planning system at the time. Former Washington Redskins Head Coach and then Detroit Lions QB Coach, Jim Zorn, demonstrated the GI2000 to Saban’s staff in East Lansing on my behalf but Nick turned me down through my sales contact, Spartans Offensive Quality Control Coach, Pat Shurmur, who later went on become the Head Coach for the N.Y. Giants. The feature documentary, directed by Jimmy Jenkins and produced by David Jacobson, releases exclusively in theatres nationwide for one night only on July 31. Required Reading & Source Media, in partnership with Fathom Entertainment, the leading specialty distributor of content to theatrical partners worldwide, will showcase this nationwide theatrical release. Fathom boasts a worldwide cinema distribution network operating in 45 countries with a live digital broadcast network of more than 1,100 locations. Tickets go on sale starting June 20.

Fathom Entertainment is owned by AMC Entertainment Inc. (NYSE: AMC), Cinemark Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: CNK), and Regal Cineworld Group (LSE: CINE.L).

The Legends of ‘Bama

Alabama has dominated college football in the last century: 18 national championships, 30 Southeastern Conference (SEC) Championships, and 447 players drafted into the NFL.

“Coach Bryant would be the person I think is the greatest coach of all time. He won playing conventional football. He won running the wishbone. He won having a passing-type offense when he had those kinds of players,” said Saban. “But I think about the things he established from an intangible standpoint—discipline, toughness, people being responsible to do their job. I’ve always heard how his leadership helped his players be more successful at whatever they chose to do.”

Through first-hand accounts from barrier-breaking players spanning five decades, the film explores the culture of relentless commitment that turns raw recruits into national champions. From before and after 1970, when the USC Trojans defeated Alabama 42-21, causing Bryant to finally pivot and begin integrating Black players into ‘Bama football during the Civil Rights era, to Saban’s modern-day streak of total dominance, Nothing But A Winner highlights how buying into Alabama’s process means you’re destined to be nothing but a winner.

Two legendary Alabama football families came together to tell the story of this legacy. Marlon Humphrey, an All-American defensive back under Saban and four-time Pro Bowler currently with the Baltimore Ravens, executive produced and financed the majority of the project, alongside his sister and co-producer Breona. Their father Bobby Humphrey, a former two-time First-Team All Pro in the NFL and All-American running back at Alabama, is an integral voice in the film.

“For me, living out this legacy isn’t just about what I do on the field, it’s about who I am off it, too. I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to represent something bigger than myself: the values, the work ethic, and the resilience that were passed down to me at Alabama and that I am now living in the NFL,” said Marlon Humphrey. “I feel a responsibility to turn around and challenge and support the next generation, which I am excited to do with this film.”

Known for his acting (“NCIS: Los Angeles”)Caleb Castille, who played defensive back under Saban at Alabama, also serves as a producer for Nothing But A Winner. Caleb Castille’s father Jeremiah, who played defensive back under Bryant and later served as team chaplain for more than two decades, is a key feature in the film. Together, the Castilles and the Humphreys sought to capture the multi-generational impact and powerful ties that the football program has created.

“This film is deeply personal for me,” said Caleb Castille. “My father, my two brothers, and I all wore that crimson jersey, and being able to help tell the story of Alabama football’s legacy—one that shaped my own family across generations—is an honor. Producing Nothing But A Winner was more than just another project; it’s a tribute to the program that helped shape us into the men we are today.”

The sweeping story of this college football powerhouse features narratives of the athletes who played under Bryant, Coach Gene Stallings and Saban and faced the challenges of their times, reflecting on the impact the coaches made on their players, their community, and the entire country.

Sports Techie, I’ve covered the release of several sports movies including, 80 for Brady, The Boys in the Boat, Creed III, Between The Pipes, Space Jam: A New Legacy Soundtrack Release, and Space Jam: A New Legacy and The Trails of Muhammad Ali.

Noticeably absent from this flick is current Alabama Head Coach Kalen DeBoer. Replacing Saban is no easy task and neither was his first season last year after losing to Vanderbilt but on a good note, taking down Texas in Austin. Year two will place even more pressure on DeBoer to win the SEC and another National Championship for Alabama.

Saban has settled nicely into his retired life selling cars and co-hosting ESPN College Gameday.

Sports documentaries are so popular now and the bar has been set so high by the likes of ESPN, Hulu, Peacock, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, NFL Films, Apple+, Disney+ and many others including independent publishers and distributors, it truly puts the same kind of pressure as DeBoer faces replacing a legend, on both Fathom Entertainment and Producer Marlon Humphrey, to take this can’t miss content piece about the Alabama football legacy, to another level.

Afterall, Nothing But A Winner, is what ‘Bama football is all about.
