GoldieBlox, a small business that makes toys to inspire the next generation of female engineers, has won Intuit’s “Small Business Big Game”, a competition aimed to give one deserving small business the opportunity of a lifetime – a commercial during the Big Game. After millions of votes, GoldieBlox won the public’s vote and claimed the prize, beating out three other finalists and 15,000 small businesses who’d entered the Super Bowl XLVIII contest. To be part of a sports technology revolution via a Sports Techie Big Game advert together with Intuit Quickbooks was too good to pass up so our community entered after blogging about #TeamSmallBiz first to our readers. Owner Debbie Sterling, who studied engineering at Stanford, was dismayed at the lack of women in her field and felt she could do something about it. She started GoldieBlox, a unique Oakland based toy company that aims to excite girls about engineering with toys that teach these skills while appealing directly to girls. The startup company of 13 employees is on a social mission so they applied to the Small Business BigGame contest and sent in their video.
Toys for Future Innovators
Their products use stories rather than instruction manual to convey concepts. The creative staff at GoldieBlox designs toys in a way that is really appealing to girls. Their main story telling tool is a character named “Goldie” who is a girl inventor. She encourages tinkering and problem solving. Their toys are meant to inspire and encourage girls in the United States and around the world to invent anything.
Big Game Commercial
The commercial for the 2014 Intuit QuickBooks “Small Business, Big Game” winner, GoldieBlox, featured 100 girls across America taking to the streets and rallying against their ordinary and traditional pink toys. The ad’s message is about inventiveness and the powers of girls. Intut helped select the fun concept.
Game Day Spot:
Sterling said, “The commercial is about destructing the pink aisle, it’s about giving girls more options and showing that they are more than just princesses.”
Behind the Scenes: Interview with Debbie Sterling, GoldieBlox:
Intuit went so far as to allow the placement of a new GoldieBlox shirt that is now for sale. The shirt will promote their brand while all proceeds will be shared with STEM.

Sports Techie, How cool is it seeing little girls using their brains to overcome obstacles such as moving a large doll house with only their ingenuity. Using a bike crank to lower the doll house and giant wooden horsey from the second floor deck outside someone’s window to the ground where her friends awaited with a skateboard dolly got the Super Bowl 48 Big Game commercial rolling. There are many traditional pink toys to behold in this unique advert played out to a new rendition of an old Twisted Sister song, my favorite toy being the pink Big Wheel.
Debbie shared how she felt like this awesome business experience was like living in a dream. She said it felt surreal and that she needed to pinch herself to remember that this truly was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity thanks to Intuit, of shaping our future.
I encourage young Sports Techie community members, boys and girls alike, to be inventors and builders and to make anything they can dream up that consists of the morphing together of sports and technology.
The Intuit Small Business Big Game #TeamSmallBiz winner got their chance to be in front of America during SB48, I hope your small sports tech centric business wins next season.
