Strat-O-Matic is simulating the 2020 baseball All-Star Game on July 14 with Drew Carey and Slim Jim Phantom serving as managers of the American League and National League teams, respectively. These friends and Strat veterans plan to video stream on the Wizard World Twitch, Facebook and YouTube channels this Tuesday starting at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT. MLB fans can engage with each other as well as ask questions using the broadcast chat feature in hopes of receiving a response from the actor, comedian and host of “The Price is Right” or the Stray Cats drummer. Both are addicted to baseball and play in the same Strat-O-Matic (www.strat-o-matic.com) league. Carey and Phantom will choose the starting lineups from All-Star Game rosters compiled from the 33-man AL and NL rosters for the 2020 Sim Season All-Star Game with the 34th player selected by Strat-O-Matic fans on Twitter. The Sports Techie community blog wishes sporting events would be back to pre-COVID-19 conditions but that is not realistic or safe making this live sim the next best thing. Strat-O-Matic’s unprecedented past quarter growth despite coronavirus signifies how fun, entertaining and community-driven sims are. Strat-O-Matic is considered the market leader in sports simulations.
Both celebrity managers are responsible for making lineup and pitching changes during the Wizard World Virtual Experiences broadcast over their platform. Learn about Carey’s and Phantom’s love of the game and hear stories about their careers while respected sportscaster Seth Everett moderates.
“Slim Jim and I are in a Strat-O-Matic league together, so this will be a fun way to flex our managerial muscles and show that the American League is truly dominant in baseball,” joked Carey, whose Cleveland baseball fandom is well known. “Like all fans, we’ll miss not seeing the players on the field next Tuesday, but I look forward to talking baseball with Slim Jim and with fans who tune in to the broadcast.”
The likes of broadcasting legends Bob Costas, Jon Miller and Dan Shulman, former MLB All-Stars Cal Ripken Jr., Doug Glanville and Keith Hernandez, and sport super fans Ben Bernanke, Bryant Gumbel, Spike Lee and Tim Robbins, are all known Strat supporters that may or may not be a part of Strat-O-Matic’s All-Star broadcast guest “drop-in” said to include baseball and entertainment guests.
Enjoy the digital version of the game as a running visual created so fans can follow the unpredictable but high (and low) probability action.
If you are a fan and miss the live broadcast don’t sweat it as you can view it anytime on demand using the same platforms. Some 50 celebrity, artist, author and pop culture panels have used the popular (www.wizardworldvirtual.com) platform over the past weeks.
“Avid Strat-O-Matic players are found in all walks of life, and Drew Carey and Slim Jim Phantom are emblematic of its popularity across the entertainment world,” said Adam Richman, Strat-O-Matic President. “We couldn’t be more excited that they have agreed to manage the teams and we think there will be plenty of laughs, great baseball and entertainment talk.”
Carey is a stand-up comic turned actor and producer who had the distinction of having two hit shows simultaneously: the long-running comedy “The Drew Carey Show,” which ran from 1995-2004, and the improv/sketch show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” on which he was host and a producer. The success of that show led to the creation of “Drew Carey’s Improv All-Stars,” an improv troupe that performed in showrooms across the country. In July 2007, Carey was named the host of “The Price is Right,” succeeding longtime host Bob Barker.
Phantom host’s “Rockabilly Raveup” in Little Steven’s Underground Garage and Fantasy Baseball’s “Slim Jim Phantasy,” both on SiriusXM.
Check for updates results and standings daily at www.strat-o-matic.com/2020-season-simulation/. Stats will compute daily until the baseball season resumes on July 23. Strat-O-Matic will then simulate the remainder of the original schedule and playoffs, as well as preview the recently-announced abbreviated 60-game slate.
Strat-O-Matic’s rosters for their 2020 All-Star Game simulation can be seen here: http://www.strat-o-matic.com/2020allstarrosters/, while the social icing on the virtual baseball cake is allowing fans to select the final player added to both teams via Twitter at www.twitter.com/stratomatic.
Luck is when timing meets opportunity and that is exactly what happened to Strat-O-Matic as their recent growth indicates. COVID-19 led to the suspension the Major League Baseball but that did not stop Strat-O-Matic from seeing a sharp uptick in sales, traffic and social numbers. The board and Windows games, digital platform Strat-O-Matic Baseball 365, Website traffic, new users and social media, also saw major increases compared to other significant time periods because frankly, generation X, millennials and GenZ fans alike, need to satisfy their hunger for baseball as a way to connect to the game and other fans, Strat-O-Matic style.
Love sharing this 1948 story about 11-year-old Hal Richman dreaming in his bedroom in Great Neck, N.Y. about overcoming randomness of other baseball board games leading to his discovery that the statistical predictability of dice would give his game the realism he craved. Over the next decade, he perfected the game at summer camp and then as a student at Bucknell University, after producing All-Star sets in 1961 and ‘62, he parlayed a $5,000 loan from his father (and made a deal that if it didn’t work out he would work for his father’s insurance company) into the original 1962 Strat-O-Matic Baseball season game.
The gaming, sports tech and sim company manufactures the top selling sports board games and realism/stats sports digital games publishing baseball, football, basketball and hockey games to play both on and off your computer and mobile screens. “Strat-O” games are known throughout the sports community for their statistical realism and accuracy. The Company has the world’s greatest sports game stat libraries with top-of-the-line seasons dating back to the early 1900’s. At the start of the 2016 MLB season, Strat-O-Matic introduced Baseball Daily, its first product featuring digital player cards that update every day to reflect real life current player performance as the season progresses.
Sports Techie, I once asked Carey about the Seattle Sounders logo on the second floor of Kell’s, Irish bar. He was there as one of the new co-owners of the Sounders FC and was doing a Q& A with the fans after he explained the new ownership concept modeled after several European teams where the fans have a wee bit of ownership and say in the team’s direction. He was funny that evening and I appreciated his enthusiastic and heart-felt story about the team colors.
Playing fantasy sports, video games and sims often led to friends for life as is the case with Carey and Phantom. Not sure how many times they have rolled the dice and won the game on a walk-off homerun or struck out the side with the baseball loaded and no outs facing the heart of the order, but you better believe it’s the hundred’s if not thousand’s.
It is hard to believe Atlanta Braves sensation is not in the starting lineup or a reserve and needs the fans to vote him in based on the sim season to date.
Final NL All-Star Vote
OF: Ronald Acuna, Braves
1B: Paul Goldschmidt, Cardinals
C: Carson Kelly, Diamondbacks
RHP: Joe Ross, Nationals
Next-gen fans, you may not love baseball yet nor have any idea who the Ironman (not on the Avengers) is but you can go down that path by interacting with the 2020 sim season all star game provided by Strat-O-Matic and broadcasting on Wizard World this Tuesday.
Enjoy the interactive sim.
Remember to vote in Acuna, he should he an ASG starter.
See you later sportstechie in Seattle, Atlanta and around the world!
