Sophia from sports-management-degrees.com posted an Infographic “What’s That Olympic Sport Called Again?”, which the Sports Techie community blog is happy so share with our readers all over the world. Many of the summer and winter Olympic sports in this Infographic have a glorious history that go back over one hundred years. Every two years we turn on our t.v.’s and digital devices to some surprisingly obscure Olympic sports. Here’s what you need to know to keep you entertained from curling to trampoline according to the Sports Management Degrees Infographic. Since the Sochi Olympics have already started, I offer my initial Sports Techie thoughts about each of the three winter Olympic sports featured in the Infographic below.

Winter Olympics
Biathlon – The technological advancement in skis and guns since the sport was born in Norway back in 1861 have transformed the biathlon into the diverse and popular sport it is today with a good number of the top countries in the Sochi competition having a good chance to medal, including the United States. These superb athletes keep their heart rate low and steady while shooting Mission Impossible style weapons.
Bobsleigh/Luge/Skeleton – All three sports have been significantly influenced by technology to the point that BMW partnered with TeamUSA this year in order to tap into the German companies amazing car designing abilities and Olympic experiences in hopes they can co-create faster bobsleds and skeletons that have improved safety. The Olympic Skelton helmet ranking by Bleacher Report gives you a good indication of how important custom helmets have become in this sport that loves tech.
Curling – To give you an example of how important this sport is on a Russian scale, the Russia Federation constructed the Sochi “Ice Cube” Curling Center located in the Coastal Cluster, inside the Olympic Park grounds, with a capacity of 3,000 Russian and International fans. The IceCube is simplistic in its design, something Russia believes symbolizes democracy, and accessibility alongside the festivity, which is characteristic of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Sports Techie community is excited to share the news that the “Ice Cube” is a moveable building, making it possible to be dismantled and transported for post-Games use as a curling center in another Russian city.

Sports Techie, The 21st Olympics was less than three hours away from Seattle in Vancouver, BC.
