Watching this trailer of the first Netflix original documentary, “The Short Game,” got me excited about my six-month old baby boy who will hopefully one-day have a love of sport that beams forth from within the world’s best seven-year old golfers as they train and compete in the World Championship of Junior Golf. On Thursday, December 12 at 12:01AM PT you can follow eight of the most competitive golfers around the globe and see a sweet and humorous inside look at their lives on Netflix while using your mobile devices or Internet connected TV. The Sports Techie community blog is happy to share information about the first ever Netflix doc that is far more than golf, this is life.
The Short Game – Official Trailer – Netflix [HD]
The Short Game
Emmy® award-winning director Josh Greenbaum’s feature debut premiered at South by Southwest (SXSW) and won the 2013 Audience Award. It was Academy qualified in a limited theatrical release through Phase 4 Films and Samuel Goldwyn Films. “The Short Game” is produced by Rafael Marmor, Christopher Leggett, and Josh Greenbaum, and executive produced by Jessica Biel, Justin Timberlake, Timm Oberwelland, John Battsek and David Frankel.
“‘The Short Game’ provides a highly entertaining, family friendly and joyful vantage into a unique world that most people fantasize about: being the best in the world at something. The fact that this dream is pursued by children playing a grownups’ game is intriguing and inspiring,” says Lisa Nishimura, Netflix VP of Original Documentary and Comedy. “We seek to provide the very best storytelling within the documentary filmmaking category and ‘The Short Game’ is the rare example of a beautifully told and heart-warming tale which appeals to all generations.”
Every year, the top golfers from around the world come together for the Pinehurst World Championship in North Carolina, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a more skilled group of competitors than the seven-year olds featured in “The Short Game.” The new documentary, which can only be seen on Netflix, is both entertaining and inspiring as viewers get to watch these pint-sized golfers train for and compete in the World Championships of Junior Golf and the friendships they form along the way.
Featuring top young golfers around the world from South Africa to China to the US including Allan Kournikova (Anna’s younger brother) and Amari “Tigress” Avery, “The Short Game” captures a handful of amazingly passionate kids who simultaneously pursue friendship and first-place. The film also features golf legends Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus.
“As a filmmaker, you hope your work will reach as many people as possible and that’s what’s so exciting about partnering with Netflix, who are presenting some of the most original and cutting edge programming on the planet right now,” said director Josh Greenbaum. “The idea of people all across the world being able to watch the film is a dream come true.”
The Netflix original documentary will be available to stream in all territories where Netflix is available – U.S., Canada, the UK, Ireland, Latin America, the Nordics and the Netherlands.
Sports Techie, My eighteen month old nephew Rokk Roble has the eye of the tiger for playing sports that each of these eight kids have for the sport of golf. I am sure you have witnessed the same commitment to the game by children you have or know. Towards the end of the trailer there are some glimpses of sports technology training devices used to enhance performance. The film’s trailer on YouTube gives me a good sense of the global message Netflix’s first original documentary is trying to send of trying your best at something. Bravo to Netflix, the director and the producers for truly capturing the light-hearted look at the intensity the world’s top under seven year old golfers bring to play.
