Sports Techie, I was living the dream in Orange County California working as a sports agent for Pro Moves athletic agency in 1995, the epic movie “Jerry Maguire” about super agent Drew Rosenhaus came out in 1996. I received a fax inviting two of our basketball players; Lorenzo Orr (Lo) from USC and Carl Simpson from the University of Texas, to a Los Angeles Lakers training camp from Head Coach Del Harris on behalf of Assistant General Manager, Mitch Kupchak, and General Manager, Jerry West. I was literally a few steps away from representing a NBA player.

The Infographic recommends earning a Master’s degree which is excellent advice should you want to perform sports agent work. The sports management role of the agent has indeed evolved. Back when I was in this Industry, social media was not around to help promote an agency or agent’s clients. Passing a sports agent exam and earning a certification is required in order to represent MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL hockey players. Many agents are attorneys who charge $400 per hour to offer legal advice, promotion and PR.
There are over 3,000 registered sports agents. The average commission fee an agent earns is 3 to 5 percent of the value of the contract. The top earner’s make over one million in commissions and are the superagents of LeBron James, Derek Jeter and the Manning brothers. Creative Artists Agency (CAA) has over $5 billion in current contract, more than double what the next firms bring in at Octagon and IMG. JAY-Z has a new agency named Roc Nation Sports who are making waves in the NBA and MLB.
Since 1933, sports management has been an evolving profession that anyone can enter. All you have to do is remember to be like Tom Cruise and show me the money…
