MNMT honored alongside world’s leading sports leagues, teams, and media companies
The Sports Technology Power List 2024, announced by The STA Group added Monumental Sports Network (MNMT) at number 83 out of the top 100 in a show of industry respect for consistent innovations. The list is an annual assessment of the brands and organizations which are driving technological innovation within the sports industry and celebrates the work of 100 brands from around the world, representing all major facets of sports business. The thoughtful list is determined using a blend of AI-powered analysis, insights from The STA Group, and a final verdict from a distinguished panel of judges. Over the past year, MNMT has continued to leverage innovative technologies to build out its state-of-the-art, digitally focused media platform, which holds the local broadcast rights for the NHL’s Washington Capitals, the NBA’s Washington Wizards, the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, and the NBA G League’s Capital City Go-Go. “Being named to The Sports Technology Power List 2024 is a great honor and a testament to our network’s continued innovation and commitment to delivering cutting-edge fan viewing experiences across all platforms,” said Zach Leonsis, President of Media & New Enterprises at Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE). “This recognition underscores our dedication to revolutionizing local sports media with state-of-the-art technology and content that engages and energizes our fan base.”
Pushing Sports Tech Boundaries
MNMT has revolutionized fan engagement, leveraging advanced technologies to deliver a personalized user interface accessible on multiple platforms, including web, mobile, smart TVs, and connected devices. MNMT’s platform consolidates real-time game statistics, live matches, match previews, pre-game shows, and post-game videos into a unified hub. Additionally, seamless integration with third-party tools like Sportradar enables efficient retrieval and display of player statistics and MNMT’s collaboration with WSC (an automated sports highlight clipping technology) facilitates smooth video clipping and highlight creation.
In March, MNMT opened a brand-new multi-million-dollar home for the independent media platform, including a best-in-class production facility and broadcast studios. The new space consolidates nearly 200 employees into one unique 39,000 square foot, LEED-certified headquarters, featuring a state-of-the-art broadcast network. Notably, the project entailed building a “building within a building,” including a new electric service, redundant chiller plant cooling towers, an emergency generator, and a data center with UPS, all to allow 24/7 operation with full backup capability.
The MNMT production center is a SMPTE 2110 facility that features two top quality studios which can combine on non-conflict nights to create one single national telecast worthy experience. The main studios feature 24 cameras, 1,200 square feet of 4K quality LED monitors, and innovative robotics to help create the best possible pre- and post-game show viewing experiences for sports fans in the national capital region. The facility also includes two insert studios and five control rooms to produce multiple events simultaneously.
In addition to its coverage of the Wizards, Capitals, Mystics, and Go-Go, MNMT proudly boasts a comprehensive schedule of original programming and live men’s and women’s college basketball, college football, college volleyball, high school basketball, and esports, as well as Washington Spirit (NWSL), Old Glory DC (Major League Rugby), Washington Freedom (Major League Cricket), and Annapolis Blues (NPSL) games. In total, MNMT will air close to 500 games during the 2024-25 season, an all-time high.
In recognition of the network’s exemplary achievements throughout the year, in December, Sports Business Journal (SBJ) announced Monumental Sports Network as the recipient of its “Best in Local Media” award and MNMT was awarded best new show and outstanding individual achievement in sports broadcasting at the 2024 Cynopsis Sports Media Awards, while also receiving six Capital Emmy Awards in June.

Sports Techie, looking at the lists top 5, the NBA sits at number 1 after an intense off season bidding war for their future broadcasting and streaming rights. The deal was won with a whooping $76 billion in fees over 11-years paid by Disney (ABC and ESPN), Comcast (NBA and Peacock) and Amazon starting with the 2025-26 season and running through the 2035-36 season. This ends a 40 year run between the NBA and Turner Sports, and with TNT since 1988, unless Warner Bros. Discovery wins a legal fight in the works.
Number 2 is the McLaren Formula 1 Team that saw 2 racers finish in the top ten at position 6 and 7, respectively, last weekend at the Las Vegas Grand Prix. F1 racing is still not a top ten sport worldwide but that gap is closing fast thanks to their heavy reliance on sports tech innovations.
Apple notched third place after a year in which the MLS Season Pass was exclusively streamed on Apple TV+ and saw record subscription and viewership streaming numbers during the 2024 season after Lionel Messi signed with Inter Miami CF, forever changing American soccer going forward.
AWS Sports was fourth on the list and deservedly so as they helped to take over Thursday Night Football (TNF) streaming exclusively on Prime Video. The NFL clearly dominates the American digital and linear airways with Amazon’s partnership which includes powering NFL Next Gen Stats via machine learning and AI, both key components of their streaming strategy.
Emirates Team New Zealand earned fifth place on the U.K. based list but in all transparency, I’m educated guessing as a domestic U.S. sports tech expert that over 90 to probably 95 percent or even more of American sport fans have no idea who they are and how important they are in the sailing world.
One noticeably missing business is Netflix, who together with Most Valuable Promotions, probably should have made this or any 2024 sports tech list based on the Mike Tyson and Jake Paul fight watched by an estimated 74 million live streamers even though the stream had massive buffering issues and the fight was said to be rigged, which I agree with.
Congrats to MNMT, the Washington D.C. region and fanbases have a solid and creative power brand that truly gets sports tech as awarded by The STA Group.
See you later sportstechie in Seattle, Atlanta and around the world!
