Each alternate broadcast will be modeled after ESPN’s popular “ManningCast” broadcasting shows
Washington D.C. NHL and NBA are about to get alternative broadcasts and shows on Monumental Sports Network (MNMT) for the Capitals and Wizards 2023-24 seasons. The live programming on the local media platform includes five alternate Capitals broadcasts and three Wizards alternate broadcasts available throughout the DMV region on linear TV and via various streaming options. Each alternate broadcast will be modeled after ESPN’s popular “ManningCast” broadcasting shows. Look for a rotation of engaging, knowledgeable and entertaining, hosts and analysts, with a variety of special guests. Fans will be immersed in real-time analysis of the live games and action, featuring engaging conversation and insight about the Capitals and Wizards. Additional content will include trending topics involving the NBA and NHL, complete with live data and stats using a dynamic L Bar presentation on screen. The Sports Techie community blog welcomes alternative broadcast options viewers can watch the entire game or check in periodically throughout the games, as well as using it as a second screen option. Monumental Sports Network will offer a free preview of the network’s live games between April 2-4.
“We’re excited to experiment with new alternate broadcast formats for our fanbase,” said Zach Leonsis, President of Media & New Enterprises at Monumental Sports & Entertainment. “This complimentary live viewing experience demonstrates our commitment to doing more with our live rights than ever before while also super serving our fanbase.”
MNMT D.C. Sports Insiders
Regularly appearing D.C insiders for the Capitals alternate broadcasts include Grant Paulsen of 106.7 The Fan, former Capitals forward and Stanley Cup champion Devante Smith-Pelly, former Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau, and Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Sports Network.
On the Wizards stream, regularly appearing talent includes JP Finlay of 106.7 The Fan, NBC 4 WRC, and MNMT, former Wizards center and current MNMT analyst Jason Smith, former Wizards play-by-play announcer Steve Buckhantz, and University of Maryland men’s basketball hall of famer Greivis Vásquez.
New Studio Space Powers Digital Production
The new MNMT production center, which the network began designing in June of 2022, is a two-story, SMPTE 2110 facility that features two top quality studios which can combine on non-conflict nights to create one single national telecast worthy experience. The main studios feature 24 cameras, 1,200 square feet of 4K quality LED monitors, and innovative robotics to help create the best possible pre- and post-game show viewing experiences for sports fans in the national capital region. The facility also includes two insert studios, five control rooms to produce multiple events simultaneously, and brand-new office space for more than 150 Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) employees.
“Our new production facility and studio grant us the opportunity to innovate around the live viewing experience for our fans. I believe that these initial alternate broadcasts are only a precursor to what will be developed as soon as next season.” added Leonsis.
The alternate broadcasts represent the latest step in Monumental Sports Network’s overhaul of its programming lineup since purchasing the network from NBC Universal in August 2022, including multiple new in-game enhancements, new original programming, and additional on-air talent. The network currently offers fans access to multiple camera angles during live home games, with additional functionality including the ability to rewind, watch in slow motion and freeze the action.
Original Content Delivery
Capitals and Wizards alternate broadcasts will be available both on linear tv (on overflow station MNMT2) and via Monumental’s digital streaming platform within the network’s footprint. Fans can watch the broadcasts through their Pay TV subscription, on monumentalsportsnetwork.com, or by downloading the Monumental streaming app on iOS, Android, Apple TV, Roku, and Amazon Fire TV and using an eligible TV Everywhere log-in.
For fans without a Pay TV subscription, in October, Monumental Sports Network unveiled direct-to-consumer (DTC) subscription memberships for viewers seeking to access live and on-demand programming. For fans interested in a DTC subscription, Monumental Sports Network is offering a free preview of the network’s live games on April 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Between April 2-30, fans will be able to purchase discounted annual memberships ($155) at monumentalsportsnetwork.com/welcome or by downloading the Monumental Sports Network app.
More D.C Sports
In August 2022, Monumental Sports & Entertainment acquired full ownership of NBC Sports Washington from Comcast/NBC Universal. The station was rebranded Monumental Sports Network in September 2023 with a new slate of programming. In November, Monumental Sports Network announced partnerships with several local universities to air 50 college basketball games on the network during the 2023-24 season. The innovative network also broadcasts live college football, college volleyball, high school basketball, esports, and recently announced a slate of Washington Spirit (NWSL) and Old Glory DC (Major League Rugby) games set to air this spring and summer.
Sports Techie, if you just want to watch the game, then alternative broadcasts may not be for you. Perhaps, it is best served as a second screen option for you viewers.
However, should you live in the DMV region and want an alternative broadcast with local announcers, broadcasters and special guests you enjoy, complete with innovative insights, stats and entertainment, then MNMT’s linear TV, or streaming on the network’s broadcast platform option, is your new digital ticket.
These new alternative broadcasts may not be ManningCast but that might be the beauty of it for Caps and Wiz fans.
Be sure the watch the free trial (April 2-4) for a chance to tune in on April 4 for the Capitals vs Penguins hockey game to see the cutting edge delivery, content and infotainment.
Thanks to Monumental Sports Network for sharing this story today with our global readership and followers.
