The Boys in the Boat, based on the book by Daniel James Brown, is a sports drama based on the inspiring true story set during the worst times of the Depression when the 1936 University of Washington rowing team overcame long odds to win the gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Berlin against the best rowers in the world, including the vaunted Nazi crew. Director George Clooney brings the #1 New York Times bestselling non-fiction novel to the big screen in a underdog story for the ages against all odds, as eight college students with little means, work hard and together to reach the summit of both Olympic and internal success. The stories’ backdrop besides Germany is the city of Seattle and Washington state, the place I grew up in. Racing crew in the Montlake Cut between Lake Washington and Lake Union on Opening Day of the boating season takes on new meaning after witnessing, “The human spirit prevails over circumstances.” The Sports Techie community blog is proud to share the first look of the latest movie directed by George Clooney, starring Joel Edgerton and Callum Turner, screenplay by Mark L. Smith. The film is set for release on Christmas day in theaters only.

The movie trailer released today features Clooney leading his crew on-set and previews the flick’s dynamics during the depths of the Depression and resulting character development journeys. Hope is the name of the game for nine working-class American boys without the means to pay for college so they try out for the Huskies crew team in hopes of earning a spot on the coveted squad, a chance to eat hot meals, sleep in a warm bed, and have paid tuition and book fees. All life perks they could not afford the same as many fellow Americans during the Great Depression.
Clooney builds up the story of how the quaint team, consisting of the sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, become the UW’s eight-oar crew team. They take on the seniors, then take on the fraternity kids, win against elite teams from the East Coast and Great Britain, before taking on the Third Reich’s crew in a final race sure to thrill you to the heights of any sporting competition, then bring you to tears seconds later when their unprecedented accomplishment hits your very soul in a good and relatable way.
Sports Techie, the Spirit of ’28 to ’36 takes you back like movies can do to relive the troubling era before the start of World War II as if you were there thanks to the magic of director Clooney. Teenager Joe Rantz, has no family or life prospects, but somehow rows on with the tight crew to uplift his own spirit, those of his somber teammates, and millions of fans with equally crippled spirits, by leading his brothers in oars to a final victory and new chance in life.
Defeating Adolf Hitler’s Aryan Nation crew truly rivals the also true story of African-American, track and field star, Jessie Owens, and his four gold medals also won during the 36′ Berlin Olympics.
Although I have not seen the movie yet, I have seen hundreds of films and reviewed a few such as 80 For Brady, Creed III, Between The Pipes, and Space Jam: A New Legacy.
I too also understand the gritty way forward in life for all athletes and non-athletes alike as the world continues to tear itself apart because of racism, elitism and religious differences to the detriment of mankind, wildlife and mother earth.
We can and must do better eh.
