Team USA Wrestling Olympic Legends Of The Mat
You might know the names of the Olympic wrestling greats, but before the medals and accolades, they had to put in years of work. Many of the greats had to overcome difficulties early in life, struggles that developed the tenacity and toughness that ultimately fueled their success on the mat. The Sports Techie blog loves these kinds of stories that inspire others in the sport, fans and family alike. Check out the following infographic for a look at some of the greatest American wrestlers the sport has ever known. While the sports technology component may be missing to some, I believe tech allows modern-day wrestlers the digital ability to share across social media platforms with each fan.
Modern U.S. Olympic Wrestling Legends
All professional wrestlers will tell you that wrestling is more than a sport it’s a lifestyle. Over time, many wrestlers have made it their purpose to guarantee the struggles faced early on continue to help future wrestlers secure a spot in the Olympic games, ensuring that wrestling remains a highly-respected, core sport that reflects the patriotism of celebrated U.S. athletes. Before the medals came decades of hard work and seemingly insurmountable challenges. The determination and tenacity that make up each individual story of success have helped others reach international achievements. Take a minute to look at the infographic above detailing some of the greatest American wrestlers the sport has ever known. Their triumphs and abilities to overcome even the toughest hurdles will amaze you.
Sports Techie, Wrestling goes back to the earliest Olympic Games in Greece. A few months ago, Team USA wrestlers led by superstar Jordan Burroughs grappled it out at Times Square against team Cuba promoting the Beat The Street program inspiring 3,000 urban community youth in the New York City area. The “Salsa in the Square” event helps to build Big Mo as the Rio 2016 Olympics fast approach.
The UFC® is set to sponsor the upcoming 2015 World Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas. UFC as an official sponsor of the 2015 World Wrestling Championships hosted Monday, September 7 through Saturday, September 12 at the Orleans Arena, next to The Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
I was selling the Pro View video training system developed in Germany back in 1998 and attended a USA Wrestling event at Key Arena in Seattle to show those in attendance how this pioneering sports tech product operated, including Olympian great, John Smith. I wheeled in the two deck VHS system and recorded the legend, Dan Gable, with a camcorder (well before smartphones and tablets arrived) as he spoke to an assortment of college, high school and youth coaches sitting around the mat about his coaching career, wresting techniques and the sport he loved to play.
My bothers and I grew up watching professional wrestling broadcast from Vancouver, BC with our TV that used a rabbit ear antennae because we didn’t have cable television. Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka and Rowdy Roddy Piper were some of the stars. Last March, my bro took his family to the WWF WRESTLEMANIA 31 event at Levi’s Stadium.
Watch the based-on-a-true-story Sony Pictures movie, Foxcatcher, to get a perspective of how much wrestlers like Mark and Dave Shultz sacrificed and underwent everyday life pressures to endure as wrestling champions.
I recommend you follow the National Governing Body for Wrestling in the USA at their Twitter handle here, @USAWrestling. They represent the grassroots efforts of men, women, boys and girls that aspire to make a high school varsity squad, earn a college scholarship or win a gold medal at the World Games and Olympics.
Best of luck to all wrestlers around the globe at the World Championships and go Team USA members.
See y’all later in Seattle, Atlanta and around the world.
