Set your “Soul” free with the all-new Mercedes-Benz CLA class 2013 Super Bowl 47 commercial.
The Mercedes-Benz all-new CLA 2013 Super Bowl commercial is tempting to imagine. Sure the main character is a dude who I consider to be Sports Techie but it might as well be a woman. It’s the life image upgrade offered by the Devil, played by actor William Dafoe, which this CLA advert delivers. “This September, set your ‘soul’ free,” says Mercedes-Benz USA. Make a deal with the Devil and have the car and everything that goes with it…!

SB47 CLA Commercial
Spoiler alert – watch the YouTube video first before you read the rest of this blog.
The commercial is set in New Orleans, Louisiana, the host city for Super Bowl 47. I have spent a little time in ‘The Big Easy’ and feel like I know the vibe a bit. Since 2005, Mercedes Benz has donated to charitable programs, post-Katrina.
Selecting the song ‘Sympathy for the Devil’ by the Rolling Stones makes this ad really come together, especially syncing words with the video images.
The star is sitting in a café looking at a non-digital, outdoor banner installation that says, “Introducing the all-new CLA,” when up pops Dafoe with the offer of a lifetime. Take the CLA out for a ride, sign the dotted line and it’s all yours. The Devil has a gold capped pen, heavy pinkie ring, and special chain medallion. The Mercedes slogan “The best or nothing,” is really what is on the table by Dafoe.
Off you go, “The seductive CLA,” magically takes you on your next red carpet date. Kate Upton, Sports Illustrated Model, is the beautiful Hollywood starlet who is waiting for you to get there, how sweet is that.
You execute a wicked U-turn parking job in a stylized CLA, 4-door coupe, announcing your presence to the packed event with authority. Hundreds of press, reporters and bloggers are digitizing the experience with cameras, smartphones and microphones. Kate mugs with you, all is good.
Then you whisk away to later that evening when you are dancing at a popping dance club. You perform a Michael Jackson choreographed spin move on the dance floor with Usher, a Grammy Award winning artist, which turns out to be a sheer delightful.
Afterwards you are driving in the next scene to Las Vegas with some happy admirers in the back seat. If you have ever driven to Las Vegas during a sunrise you know how the sun looks as it comes up in the desert, it’s gorgeous. Finally y’all make it to Sin City, safe and secure.
Flash to your crazy photo shoot schedule with GQ, Vanity Fair (while sitting on a horse), Wired in Japanese, and many other magazine covers. Next, a Justin Bieber like mob is outside your door wanting all your attention so you run to the CLA and make a quick getaway to my favorite scene of all, the race track.
Here you are inside a sold-out stadium using the CLA’s 208-hp inline-4 engine technology to race at high-speed ease with an Indy Car or F1 car and drivers. You maneuver behind the lead car’s draft and do a little shake and bake move to pull alongside, and in slow-motion footage you look over to the other driver and give him the ‘hey’ wave while speeding off into first place to win.
Finally your CLA puffs away and you’re once again back with Dafoe being asked to close on the deal by signing a menacing looking contract. The press is on. ”What do you say,” he asks? The Devil has some other dark rings that you did not notice before. A quick glance outside and you see the CLA banner install is finished with a sticker price of under $30K.
And then it hits you, for that price you can afford to have your own CLA “Soul” and have no need for any Devil deals. “Discover the CLA for yourself,” via Mercedes-Benz.

Sports Techie, Super Bowl commercials are big NFL sports business and Mercedes Benz is in the middle of it with this new ad about their new stylized automobile. The Mercedes-Benz SportsBiz plan is to have this CLA campaign touch a younger Sports Techie at heart with the help of social media and bloggers. Super Bowl commercials compete for your attention and this one by Mercedes-Benz certainly does that in a big way. Dream big, Sports Techie.
At the end of the video, look up to the right top corner for text and a link to enter and win a trip to New York City to see the CLA in person. I hope a fellow Sports Techie wins.
Enjoy the SB47 football game in the Superdome on Sunday. The NFL halftime commercials on CBS television will be simulcast live online at CBSSports.com. Go vote for your favorite SB 47 commercial.
