College basketball has a new Legends of Basketball Showcase quadruple doubleheader presented by the National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA) and Intersport. Look for the inaugural hoops mini-tournament Fall Classic to begin play of December 17, 2022 in Chicago at the United Center. The four-game set features the Northern Iowa Panthers taking on the Towson University Tigers, while the Tulane Green Wave play the George Mason Patriots in the two afternoon games. In the evening session, the Dayton Flyers play the Wyoming Cowboys followed by the NC State Wolfpack battling the Vanderbilt Commodores. The Sports Techie community blog curator is excited to share this announcement by the NBRPA as a means of spotlighting the organization’s work for members made up of former professional basketball players from the NBA, ABA, and WNBA, respectively. All game times along with television broadcasting and internet streaming details will be forthcoming at a later date.

The NBRPA was founded in 1992 and serves former professional basketball players as they transition into life after playing basketball for a living. The NBRPA is the only alumni association of its kind supported directly by the NBA and National Basketball Players Association (NBPA).

Fans can purchase 2022 Legends of Basketball Showcase tickets on September 21 when they become available for sale to the general public, per session. Hoopaholics can buy the entire four game experience by buying both afternoon and evening sessions, as required.

The selected eight programs competing in the Legends of Basketball Showcase bolster 204 NBA Draft selections as a whole. Several coaches participating in the last days of summer event are connected to the NBRPA, and vice versa.
The men’s basketball Head Coach at Vandy is 18-year NBA veteran Jerry Stackhouse, a former No. 3 overall draft pick and two-time All-Star appearing in 970 games for eight different teams. Wyoming assistant coach Shaun Vandiver is a former first-round pick (25th overall) in the 1991 NBA Draft by the defending 2022 NBA Champions, the Golden State Warriors. George Mason’s Head Coach Kim English was drafted in the 2nd Round (44th overall) of the 2012 NBA Draft by the up-and-coming Detroit Pistons and Northern Iowa assistant coach Seth Tuttle played for the Miami Heat’s Summer League team in 2015.
NBRPA Board Chairman Johnny Davis is a proud Dayton alum, leading the Flyers in scoring for three consecutive seasons (1973-76) before spending nearly four decades with the NBA as a player, front office executive, assistant and head coach. Additionally, two NBRPA Board Members are NC State alums. Thurl “The Pearl” Bailey, led the Wolfpack in both scoring and rebounding during the team’s miracle 1983 NCAA Championship season coached by the iconic Jimmy Valvano before he embarked on a 13-season NBA career. Mr. Chucky Brown, led the Wolfpack in scoring in 1988 (16.6 ppg) and rebounding during the following 1989 season (8.8 rpg).
This is first official matchup between Northern Iowa and Towson. Tulane and George Mason have played twice previously, with each team winning once. Dayton and Wyoming have also met twice before, with the Flyers, pre-Steph Curry (2006-2009), winning 62-47 in December of 2004, while the Cowboys earned the first matchup victory in January of 2004, 61-59. The matchup between NC State and Vanderbilt will be the sixth all time, with the Commodores owning a 3-2 edge in the series. Each of the previous three matchups have been neutral site contests, with NC State winning the last matchup in 2018.
