Compelling NBA All-Star 2024 social media content in Indianapolis provided by the National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA) and their Legends Media & Entertainment (LME) team set a record, with a combined estimated reach of 875 million fans. These juicy metrics surpassed last year’s 850 million fans reached mark. The combined content generated on the NBRPA’s @NBAAlumni social media channels, partner activations, media coverage and fan interaction, yielded over 11 million unique views and a 200% increase in fans, and combined video views, impressions, and engagement during NBA All-Star Weekend. The Sports Techie community blog gives our virtual, one-handed applause to LME leadership for their hard work resulting in these record posts and resulting data consumption. The NBA Legends Brunch on Sunday saw about 150 former NBA and WNBA players represented including the likes of Julius Erving, Dominique Wilkins and Oscar Robertson. This popular event and tough ticket to get was part of the sticky NBRPA content.
“The opportunity to bring in over 200 NBA, WNBA, ABA and Harlem Globetrotter Legends and a full complement of world class partners to Indianapolis, presents a unique occasion to showcase the history of the game of basketball,” said Scott Rochelle, President & CEO, NBRPA. “NBA All-Star is the epicenter of the basketball universe and it’s an honor for the NBRPA to be part of the fabric that showcases these legendary men and women that have built the sport into what it is today.”

Sports Techie, I watched some of the NBA Rising Stars games and thoroughly enjoyed learning more about these up and coming players as they competed while also having fun, during All-Star Saturday Night. The Skills Challenge was not so good but the 3-Point Contest was terrific viewing. The Steph vs Sabrina 3-Point Challenge was must-see TV or streaming. I fell asleep for the Slam Dunk contest but from the social media posts I read, it was about as competitive as the actual All-Star Game, so not very. All in all, ASG weekend broadcasts were entertaining.
At the NBA Legends brunch, Larry Bird received the Legend of the Year award, Tamika Catchings received the Pioneer Award, Jalen Rose got the Bob Lanier Community Impact Award and Reggie Miller won the Hometown Hero Award.
Miller was presented with the coveted trophy by celebrity Spike Lee, who was dressed in the blue and orange colors of his favorite team, the New York Knicks, the team Reggie and the hometown Pacers often got the best of in the NBA Playoffs.
Well done, NBA Legends’ LME for helped to drive online attention, engagement and key messaging to NBA All-Star weekend events as well as your various causes.
