Bring on The 5 and The First Step Apps

You can measure a 40-yard, best 10-yard spilt time on The 40 but that just scratches the surface of measuring different and important distances. Because I’ve been around the block, the moon and the sun many times over, my suggestion to the Ajmeri’s is to build out the 5-yard blast and 1-yard steps, measurements.

I’ve talked to many athletic training experts and coaching professionals across multiple sports to include, football, soccer, basketball and baseball, about measuring the 40 yard dash, yet, the conversations eventually lead to the 5-yard blast.

Think about it. Can a receiver use his or her timed 5-yard burst to create separation from a defensive back at the line of scrimmage? Can a pulling guard get to the edge fast enough on a run play to block an attacking defensive end or blitzing safety? The quarterback definitely needs quick and measurable, 5-yard burst feet time when performing a 3-to-5-to-7 step drop back in the pocket. Middle linebackers need that 5-yard burst to get to the line’s A and B gaps to plug the holes on run plays. I could go on and on with football or any sport, as to how important the 5-yard burst is.

Measuring a first step time is another all-important metric across sports. Soccer players use a quick first step as much as they use a 5-yard blast or 40-yard sprint downfield throughout a match. Basketball players are all about quickness and the first step on both sides of the ball. Baseball and softball players need to burst out of the batter’s box as they run towards first base, while infielders and outfielders first steps’ are crucial towards making or not making, defensive plays.

Power and flexibility are key metrics across sport but speed kills. A top 40 speed for a speedy wide receiver or cornerback is now around 4.2 seconds. An impressive 300-pound sized athlete may cover the same distance in 4.6 seconds. Both times are considered elite for their respective positions.
