Five NBRPA Legends Scholars Granted HBCU $10K Academic Scholarship Awards

NBRPA ANNOUNCES INAUGURAL CLASS OF LEGENDS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPENTS

Five Legends HBCU (Historically Black College or University) Scholarship recipients were granted by the National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA) for the 2021-2022 school year. This first undergraduate class of Legends Scholars each earned themselves a $10,000 academic scholarship. The Sports Techie community blog virtually applauds these motivated college students as they pursue the dream of attaining a degree, they will carry with them throughout their lives. In 2020, the Legends Care initiative was developed by the NBRPA to identify and reward current HBCU undergraduates through the pioneering Legends HBCU Scholarship and Legends Scholars program. HBCUs are accredited higher learning institutions with a long history of supporting a wide range of student body and alumni through innovative programs. The NBRPA represents former HBCU alum within their constituency making this inaugural Legends HBCU scholarship winning class a special group upcoming high school and academy academics can look up to for inspiration. The NBRPA and the 107 colleges (three are currently closed) recognized by the US Department of Education together have their focus on representing today’s inspired Legends Scholars while keeping the initiative moving forward to next year and beyond.

The five Legends Scholars are:

  • Damon Germaine Bryan Jr, South Carolina State University, Class of 2022
  • Saniya Keeton, Tuskegee University, Class of 2023
  • Tyrell Miller-Johnson, Central State University, Class of 2023
  • Erin Foster, Spelman College, Class of 2024
  • Jayla Imani Thornton, North Carolina A&T State University, Class of 2024

“These five outstanding young people were selected from nearly 1,000 HBCU students in recognition of their academic excellence and commitment to making a positive impact in the world,” said Scott Rochelle, NBRPA President & CEO. “We are extremely encouraged by how high our “Starting Five” have set the bar for future Legends Scholars classes and are excited to welcome these Legends Scholars into our Legends family, providing them support and resources during their collegiate career and beyond.”

The program goal is to fulfill some of the financial needs the First Five Legends Scholars accrue. This diverse scholars program was also designed to help Legends Scholars in career preparation and development, in addition to job placement and mentoring, with an emphasis on supporting both their school-years and after earning undergraduate degrees.

Five Undergraduates Attending HBCUs To Receive $10,000 Scholarships

Sports Techie, the next job or otherwise life step for these five scholarship winners is anyone’s guess but I hope to see them all fulfill career paths that can influence the good of every living creature, plant and organism, as well as the planet, because we sure could use it.

I have been to Atlanta’s Spellman College of the NBCU 107, a handful of times when driving for Lyft, pre-pandemic. Their homecoming sure is a can’t miss, fun time. Big shout out to Ms. Foster for earning this significant scholarship on her drive to graduate in 2024.

Legends Media & Entertainment (LME) just launched Legends Lounge with Trill Withers podcast produced by Legends Studio at the beginning of the NBA Finals when I called the Bucks in six, same as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Perhaps one of the five Legend HBCU scholarship and Legends Scholar inaugural recipients is a major basketball fan with the kind of passion for the game the NBRPA might just hire straight out of college or university.

Sounds like a good story and future blog opportunity to me.

See you later sportstechie in Seattle, Atlanta and around the world!
