MSE and Gensler’s breakthrough design will redefine real-time engagement at next-generation arena in downtown Washington, D.C.
Capital One Arena is undergoing a nearly $1 billion redesign featuring a new concourse complete with the new Visibowl™ and its 500 feet of immersive digital displays. The first-of-its-kind sports tech experience concept is developed via a partnership between Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) and Gensler. Fans at the brand new downtown Washington, D.C. venue will be immersed in a completely reimagined live event experience that is sure to redefine real-time engagement at the next-generation arena. The project earned national recognition as a finalist for the Fast Company 2025 Innovation by Design Awards. The Sports Techie community blog sees smart stadiums as the way for teams to uniquely connect fans with new and exciting live experiences such as Visibowl. This novel immersive digital viewing experience throughout the Capital One Arena concourse is sure to add value to viewing experiences while also generating notable ROI for sponsors and advertisers.
“Visibowl is a first-of-its-kind design that will transform how audiences engage with live events,” said Jim Van Stone, President of Business Operations at MSE. “By seamlessly blending architectural ingenuity with fan-focused technology, it’s poised to set a new global standard for real-time spectator immersion and will serve as a cornerstone of our brand-new arena’s $800 million+ transformation.”
Visibowl
Look for this cutting-edge solution to upgrade the traditional concourse walls with over 500 feet of immersive digital displays, generating high-definition video action directly to fans as they move through the venue. The concept dissolves the physical and psychological barriers between the seating bowl and concourse, ensuring spectators engaging with Visibowl will never miss a live moment—even when away from their seats. High-resolution, real-time camera feeds broadcast live on these massive digital boards, keeping fans connected to the energy or vibe of a wide variety of sports, musical and entertainment events from anywhere in Capital One Arena.
“Visibowl is far beyond something you just look at. It is an experience multiplier for guests of all levels that turns the in-between moments like grabbing food or heading to your seat into part of the experience, not a break from it,” said Andrew Jacobs, Design Director at Gensler. “Digital integrations like Visibowl are what the future of arena design is all about: where technology and architecture work together to amplify a collective experience.”
Innovation by Design Award
Now in its 14th year, the Innovation by Design Awards celebrate the designers and businesses addressing today’s most urgent challenges while anticipating the problems of tomorrow. The program is one of the most prestigious design competitions in the industry, spotlighting work that exemplifies originality, beauty, sustainability, user insight, cultural significance, and measurable business impact.
Honorees were selected by a panel of leading designers, business executives from leading organizations, and Fast Company editors, and will be featured in the fall issue of Fast Company magazine on newsstands September 23, 2025.
“The Innovation by Design Awards celebrate bold ideas and work that proves design is a true driver of business and societal progress. This year’s honorees show how creative thinking can unlock new markets, build stronger organizations, and deliver meaningful impact at scale,” said Brendan Vaughan, editor-in-chief of Fast Company.
Sports Techie, today’s announcement comes as Phase One of MSE’s sweeping venue transformation is nearing completion. MSE is taking a 360-degree approach to planning a high-tech, high-touch building that will serve millions of annual visitors for the next 25 years and set a new standard for fan experience and technological innovation.
Another key component of the next-gen arena renovation will be the Cisco Command Center.
Existing Capital One Arena tenants include the NBA’s Washington Wizards, NHL’s Washington Capitals, WNBA’s Washington Mystics, Capital One Arena, and Monumental Sports Network (MNMT).
Visibowl will provide visual, audio and animated perspectives unlike any other smart stadium on the planet.
Bravo to both MSE and Gensler for pushing the future of live action and earning a well deserved Innovation by Design Awards nomination from Fast Company.
