Gamblers love to wager on their favorite teams, local franchises and underdogs. It is estimated by QZ that more than $88 billion was wagered on games mostly using offshore online accounts because it was illegal here in the United States, while Vegas claims $2 billion was legally bet in the same year. Add in the action taken by bookies, friends and office groups, and the actual number creeps up towards the $100 billion mark.
You can quickly do the math and see why this is as big an opportunity as is legalizing marijuana for states in terms of regulation, taxation and cash windfalls not in existence last year.

DFS is legal in many states. The two heavyweights in the industry, FanDuel and DraftKings, started working on becoming official sportsbooks in New Jersey well before the recent change in law. The FanDuel Sportsbook is at Meadowlands Racetrack, nearby MetLife Stadium. DraftKings and Resorts Atlantic City also have a sportsbook partnership in place.
To join DraftKings Sportsbook you need to accept the terms of use, private policy, and agree to receive marketing communications and offers. You also have to be 21 years of age and not allow another person to use your gaming account. Users have to swear that registration info is truthful and you are not a key employee or casino employee already prohibited from taking part in this type of wagering in a N.J. simulcast operation or casino.
Mobile Gambling
Next-gen sports bets are chalk full of cutting edge technologies, no place more so than mobile. Nearly every gambler has a mobile smart device. Fans located inside certain states can now use apps to place wagers instead of laying down a bet at brick and mortar sportsbooks.
FanDuel Sportsbook is offering free bets in N.J. for first time users. MGM Live has a new mobile sportsbook app at Borgata joining SugarHouse Sportsbook as the three apps in use in NJ.
Next State Up
Three states have passed a bill allowing sports betting but are still in need of streamlining the actual process, distribution and regulation. Not all states were prepared to pounce on this new revenue stream opportunity and will discuss it in 2019 and beyond.
West Virginia had plans to go live in September at 5 licensed casinos, obviously they are behind schedule. Pennsylvania scheduled October for launch of a new mobile app and betting at 12 casinos, the clock is ticking on them. Rhode Island may be ready before the year ends. New York may speed through legislation by early 2019.
Beyond that, 32 states have nothing yet in terms of new bills and Utah will most likely never pass a sport betting bill.
The rest of the states have discussed the bill and may vote sports betting in sometime in the next few years.
New Businesses
Look for a surge in sports tech startups designed to take advantage of this new digital frontier. Experienced and rookie punters alike are always looking for a competitive edge be that from expert advice, deep-dive analytics and the never truthful injury report, a list college football will need to provide weekly as the NFL currently does to insure betting integrity.
Look for local betting boutiques to pop up inside sports bars.
Match fixing will undoubtedly become more common place. The rise of companies such as Sportradar US that provides reliable data via digital sports solutions is growing fast. They count Turner, Twitter and Samsung, together with NFL, NBA, NHL and NASCAR, as satisfied application partners.
Only Mississippi allows in-state sports betting on college football. I predict that changes as fast as the hair grows on certain new born babies, especially here in Georgia.
Sports Techie, I find it highly irregular that online banking and sportsbooks are safe in the U.S.A. yet to vote for the upcoming political elections in November, we are told online balloting is still not secure. This fact seems real fishy to me as it should to you.
