The Joe Moore Award awarded the offensive line at the University of Michigan with a first Name Image and Likeness (NIL) post season award program created by the Foundation for Teamwork. The @joemooreaward highlights the Outstanding Offensive Line Unit across college football. The nine winning members of the 2021 award partnered with the Joe Moore Award and last week were given the trophy in a ceremony held in Ann Arbor. The No. 2 ranked Wolverines take on the No. 3 University of Georgia Bulldogs in the Orange Bowl tomorrow, Dec 31 at 7:30 p.m. ET. The Sports Techie community blog hopes the College Football Playoff games including the first game between No. 1 Alabama and No. 4 Cincinnati in the Cotton Bowl at 3:30 pm EST are both as good as the Michigan o-line played together throughout the pandemic ridden season. The National Championship game is Jan 10, 2022 broadcasting live on ESPN. Be safe throughout the New Year’s eve games and celebrations.
2021 Winners Merchandise
Under offensive line coach Sherrone Moore, Michigan’s starting O-line has featured guard/tackle Karsen Barnhart (2 starts), guard Chuck Filiaga (4 starts), left tackle Ryan Hayes (13 starts), tackle Trente Jones (1 start), left guard Trevor Keegan (10 starts), right tackle Andrew Stueber (13 starts), center Andrew Vastardis (13 starts), and right guard Zak Zinter (11 starts). In addition, tight end Joel Honigford, a converted O-lineman, warrants mention as a key contributor to Michigan’s success.
The Michigan offensive linemen are to receive 100% of net t-shirt sales, minus a donation portion to a philanthropic beneficiary. The Joe Moore Award matches the players’ charitable gift, up to $10,000, to meet the goal of further impacting their respective communities.

The Trophy
The Joe Moore Award trophy, crafted by legendary sports sculptor Jerry McKenna, is the largest trophy in college football, weighing more than 800 pounds, is more than five feet wide and stands nearly seven feet tall. The trophy has been made available to Michigan to display on their campus until the 2022 winner is announced.
The Award
The Joe Moore Award is named after Joe Moore, widely regarded as one of the best offensive line coaches in college football history, and is the only major college football award to honor a group or unit. The award annually recognizes the nation’s Most Outstanding Offensive Line Unit that best display the fundamental and historical aspects of great offensive line play: Toughness, Effort, Teamwork, Consistency, Technique, and Finishing.
Past Joe Moore Award recipients include the offensive lines of the University of Alabama (2015), the University of Iowa (2016), the University of Notre Dame (2017), Oklahoma University (2018), LSU (2019), and the University of Alabama (2020 – first repeat winner).
Voting Committee
The Joe Moore Award voting committee is comprised of 13 individuals who are highly knowledgeable about offensive line play, including former linemen, coaches, talent evaluators and media analysts. This group conducts in-depth analysis by reviewing game tape every week of the season to assess both the fundamentals and subtleties of overall O-line performance.
The 2021 voting committee includes Chairman Cole Cubelic (Auburn, SEC Network); Charles Arbuckle (UCLA, Indianapolis Colts); Randy Cross (UCLA, San Francisco 49ers); Gerry DiNardo (Notre Dame, head coach at LSU); Mike Golic, Jr. (Notre Dame, NFL, ESPN); Harry Hiestand (Joe Moore disciple, NFL and College O-line Coach); Barrett Jones (Alabama, St. Louis Rams); Duke Manyweather (Humboldt State, player and coach; founder of OL Masterminds); Geoff Schwartz (Oregon, Carolina Panthers); Sam Schwartzstein (Stanford, XFL rules creator); Phil Steele (publisher of Phil Steele’s College Football Preview, ESPN); Aaron Taylor (Notre Dame, Green Bay Packers, CBS Sports); and Lance Zierlein (NFL draft analyst, NFL.com and Prospects to Pros podcast, The Athletic).

Sports Techie, my NFL offensive line guru referral is Howard Mudd, may he rest in peace. He was another highly respected coach and o-line connoisseur along with Moore. Together, we helped digitize the NFL back in 1994 and 1995 with the GridIron 2000 Windows 95 expert game-planning system co-developed by the Seattle Seahawks. Shout out to football and video game icon John Madden, he passed away this week, rip. I don’t know Joe however the award in his name is recognition by peers and recipients as to his character, abilities and contributions.
The Foundation for Life selected another deserved offensive line group. Can the Michigan men continue to dominate against the top ranked Dawgs defense and its core of interior and edge rush defensive linemen on Friday at Hard Rock Stadium?
The NIL era is moving fast forward through the NCAA. Innovative NIL deals now allow college athletes the ability to make money while attending school.
Covering Big-Ten and SEC teams is always fun to share with family, friends and fans. My aunt and two uncle’s graduated from the University of Michigan. My son says, “Go Dawgs,” because his Mom attended the University of Georgia. I’m more a Michigan State Spartans fan being born in East Lansing than a Wolverines fan but for this CFP semifinal, I say, “Go Blue!”
With 5 Bowl game cancellations thus far because of COVID, may the rest of the stadiums, venues and bowl committees make sound decisions based on the greater good.
