Space Jam is returning to theaters in the U.S. and on streaming digital devices via HBO Max* this July 16, 2021 with LeBron James starring in the animated and live action, sports comedy movie alongside Tune Bugs Bunny. Space Jam was originally released in 1996 and starred Michael Jordan. Space Jam 2 is a life changing experience for the NBA superstar and champion along with his son, Dom, as they go from living in reality to virtual reality, in the blink of a digital eye, Matrix style. As a parent and the Sports Techie community blog curator, I understand the connection adults feel for kids in need, and the resulting feeling a parent or guardian gets that you’ll do about anything for them, especially when family or close friends. I am a big fan of LeBron James for a number of reasons, number one is his loyalty and commitment to family, friends and civic responsibilities, now add big screen actor to his impressive career resume. Shout out to Warner Bros. Pictures for sharing this story.
Director Malcolm D. Lee shares his updated Space Jam vision with a new generation of Jam fans brought to real-life by the filmmaking team of Ryan Coogler, Maverick Carter and many others that used a hybrid film production process featuring a mix up of live-action, 2D animation drawings and 3D CGI.
The Goon Squad has a total of 3 NBA and 2 WNBA superstars, featuring Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson and Damian Lillard, Diana Taurasi and Nneka Ogwumike.
A New Legacy Storyline
LeBron and his boy begin the story like a typical Father and son exchange might go at his age. Dom wants his independence from Dad. Then, just like that, first Dom, then LeBron are both digitally remastered in space thanks to an A.I. character played by Oscar nominee Don Cheadle (the “Avengers” films, “Hotel Rwanda”), you will soon love to root against. Server-verse is amazing to behold.
LeBron is challenged to get his family home safely while leading the Tunes squad of Bugs, Lola Bunny, Daffy Duck, and the whole gang of at times, unruly Looney Tunes, to a necessary victory over the evil A.I.’s digitized champions played on the Space Jam court. Bron soon wishes he had the list of Dream Team players he wanted the likes of Superman, Gandalph, King Kong and Iron Giant, with a yet-to-be-determined player 5. Wonder Women might do the trick.
The Tunes versus Goons matchup on paper is super one-sided and then some. By standing up to life’s challenges, LeBron uses this experience as both teaching and bonding moments with his son, sending him a strong message to always be yourself and the light will shine forth. How can the Looney’s possibly win against the high-powered, techified Goons? By showcasing talents they already have inside and by playing together to overcome odds that at the moment seems insurmountable, they do that and much more.
Jam 2 Characters
The cast of main characters has been released but some of the credits for voice-overs and appearances have yet to be made public.
We already know about AI-G Rythem (Cheadle), the evil computer algorithm and self-proclaimed, “King of the domain.”
“King” James is of course, LeBron.
Lebron’s wife and Dom’s Mom, Kamiyah James, is played by one of my favorite actresses today, Sonequa Martin-Green (TV’s “The Walking Dead,” “Star Trek: Discovery”).
Cedric Joe plays Dominic “Dom” James, Bron’s younger son. His background is limited but his acting game is large.
Harper Leigh Alexander is Lebron’s daughter, Xosha James.
Khris Davis (“Judas and the Black Messiah,” TV’s “Atlanta”) is Malik.
Look for roles by Jeff Bergman (“Looney Tunes Cartoons”), Eric Bauza (“Looney Tunes Cartoons”), and Zendaya as Lola Bunny (upcoming “Dune,” “Malcolm & Marie”).
Goon Squad
Get ready for Arachnneka, The Brow, Wet-Fire, White Mamba, and Chronos on the Goon Squad.
Los Angeles Sparks and former WNBA MVP, Nneka Ogwumike, is a half-spider character named Arachnneka. L.A. Lakers Anthony Davis is the voice of The Brow, a half human and half bird named as a slapstick joke regarding Davis’ unibrow. The next Goon Squad player, Wet-Fire, is a human torch like character voiced by Klay Thompson. The Golden State Warriors star has been out all-season with a knee injury but that did not stop him from doing his fun, voice-over work. The White Mamba, is a half-snake tribute to Kobe Bryant, the original Black Mamba. White Mamba is otherwise known as Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury. The final Goon Squad baller, Chronos, is Damian Lillard, guard on the Portland Trail Blazer. He plays a cyborg which is appropriate since the Blazers are my sleeper team to win the 2021 NBA Championship behind Lillard’s robotic-like superpowers and human NBA skill sets used to score at will.
