Washington Mystics and Audacy Announce Partnership for Live Radio Broadcasts

The Washington Mystics, D.C.’s WNBA team, has partnered with Audacy to broadcast live games on The Team 980 (WTEM-AM), the new flagship station. The 2024 WNBA season has not been kind so far with a 1-12 Eastern Conference record after last night’s demolition by the local Atlanta Dream, 87-68. Despite being in last place, loyal fans can listen to home and away broadcasts on Audacy through the end of the season. Listen to Washington Mystics home games from Capital One Arena and away games, including their next matchup versus the Indiana Fever, led by all everything rookie, Caitlin Clark, perhaps already the most famous women’s basketball player of all-time, on Wednesday, June 19 at 7 PM ET. As a result of Clark, Fever games have been breaking WNBA attendance records. Clark was recently left of the USA women’s Olympic roster which has many basketball fans upset by the snub, but not every fan. The Sports Techie community blog has featured stories surrounding Monumental Sports Network (MNMT) which is wholly owned and operated by Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE), the buyers of NBC Sports Washington. Live Mystics games will feature audio from Monumental Sports Network and is available on The Team 980. The Regional Sports Network (RSN) business model is making a steady comeback.

“Demand for Mystics live game coverage is at an all-time high and adding a radio broadcast will allow even more fans to follow our team throughout the season,” said Alycen McAuley, Chief Business Officer for the Washington Mystics. “We are proud to see Monumental Sports Network and Audacy partner in this way and use their platforms to elevate women’s basketball.”

The news of the radio broadcast comes after Monumental Sports Network registered its highest television viewership in six seasons for a regular season WNBA game during the season opener between the Mystics and New York Liberty on May 14. Fans can live stream the remaining games with a MNMT DTC subscription.

Live Simulcast Production

The broadcasts will feature a simulcast live audio feed from Monumental Sports Network’s television broadcast with support from the new MNMT production studio (including the halftime report) and fans will be able to hear all 22 of the Mystics’ remaining regular season games available on the network this season. While most radio broadcasts will air on The Team 980, select games will air on 106.7 The Fan (WJFK-FM) and The Bet Washington (WJFK-AM), and all games will be streamed locally on the Audacy app.

“We are delighted to broaden our relationship with Audacy and continue to drive the fast-paced growth of women’s basketball in the DMV region,” said Zach Leonsis, President of Media & New Enterprises at Monumental Sports & Entertainment. “We have seen incredible television viewership for the Mystics during the first weeks of the season and we’re thrilled to offer our fans another way to tune into our games.”

The Mystics broadcast booth features University of Maryland Hall of Famer Christy Winters-Scott, who returns for her 15th season as television color analyst, and play-by-play announcer Meghan McPeak, who enters her sixth season with the team’s television broadcast.

Team 980

The Team 980 is Washington, D.C.’s first all-sports radio station. It features a live and local lineup of personalities including The Sports Junkies, Kevin Sheehan, Chris Russell, and Craig Hoffman, and is the flagship radio home of the Washington Wizards, Maryland Terrapins football and men’s and women’s basketball, and Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball.

“The Team 980 is where the DMV goes to talk basketball,” said Chris Kinard, Vice President of Sports Programming & Cluster Director of Operations, Audacy Washington, D.C. “We are excited to bring an audio presentation of Mystics games to their growing fanbase on The Team 980 AM and available on mobile and smart speakers through the Audacy app.”

Sports Techie, the network holds exclusive local television media rights for the NHL’s Washington Capitals and NBA’s Washington Wizards games. It also boasts the most comprehensive regional high-school and regional collegiate Division II-and-under sports programming in the greater Washington D.C. metro area.

RSNs took a major viability and PR hit with the MLB streaming deal with Diamond and Bally Sports facing a bankruptcy case. Last week, the new Chicago Sports Network (CHSN) launched boosted by a partnership between the Chicago Bulls, Blackhawks, White Sox and Standard Media. Sportico says CHSN’s mission is to offer these teams’ games via cable, satellite, streaming, over-the-air television, and a new digital/mobile app with fans at the center of it all.

Sounds like a carbon, digital copy of the MNMT business model, with radio now available for Mystics games via Audacy.

Here is a virtual, one-handed cheer for the resurgence of RSNs led by MNMT.
