Deltatre, the sport media and technology firm, announced today an agreement for the provision of graphic and data services for use in the production and distribution of the Premier League’s international programming. The agreement for the 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons with Premier League Productions, a division of IMG Production, represents a major milestone for deltatre. The Sports Techie blog is honored to cover this Barclays Premier League pioneering sports tech deal.

Sam Leadsom, Executive Producer, Premier League Productions, said: ”We are delighted to be working with deltatre who have impressed us with their work and we look forward to working with them over the next three years and enhancing the Premier League product for international broadcasters.”

The contract, encompassing all BBC coverage of live football matches and related studio programming, calls for deltatre to collate match results data and power TV graphics. An impressive detail is that deltatre has been the provider of results and graphics for BBC Sport’s football programming since 2006. Deltatre and the BBC have worked together for seven years across a number of global sporting events, including the 2010 South Africa World Cup and the 2012 European Championships.

Today’s announcement of the two party’s agreeing to renew their service contract for an additional three years comes on the eve of the Premier League’s broadcast here in the United States on NBC Sports, Saturday’s first game is Liverpool vs. Stoke City 7:45 EST.

deltatre’s Commercial Director, Jim Irving, notes: “deltatre has a long pedigree of working with the world’s pre-eminent broadcasters to immerse audiences in live sports action. With arguably the most exciting league here in our backyard, we are delighted to be collaborating with Premier League Production to enrich broadcasts for global audiences.”

The agreement with Premier League Productions builds upon the extensive list of customers for whom deltatre has provided digital and graphic services for football including BBC Sport and Sky Sports. IMG Production is the production division of IMG Worldwide, the global sports, fashion and media company. The service provision has also been extended beyond football to cover a variety of other compelling sporting events including World Cup Rowing, Amateur Boxing, Cross Country Championships and the upcoming 2013 Rugby League World Cup.

Hugo Sharman, Director of deltatre north, said, “We are delighted to continue our graphics provision with the BBC. Our offering has already grown considerably since its inception and we look forward to providing more exciting and compelling content as we go forward.”

Sports Tech

The specs of the sports tech includes the design, rendering and delivery of High Definition graphics for the 24 hour, seven day a week content service offering made available to Premier League broadcast licensees in 212 territories worldwide. In addition to providing live match graphics for 380 Barclays Premier League fixtures, deltatre is also enhancing studio based programming with highly functional, visually-stunning broadcast and augmented reality graphics as well as a data rich touchscreen for use by on-air journalists.

In 2011, deltatre opened an office in MediaCityUK, Salford. This close operating proximity has enabled deltatre to support the development and maintenance of state of the art services such as the Augmented Reality (AR) Graphic System used on Match of the Day. Employing virtual AR graphics enriches the viewing experience of audiences, adding a deeper understanding of match analysis and enhances topics discussed by the shows presenters.

At the heart of the graphics solution is deltatre’s proprietary graphic platform, Magma.  Via an intuitive, user-friendly interface, operators instantly generate editorially enriching visuals by populating new, pre-designed graphic templates with manually entered data or automated feeds provided by official Premier League data partner Opta. Graphics can then either be played out directly to air via the Magma Play-out application or pushed to a rendering queue. Magma’s cloud-based functionality allows multiple production operators to create and send graphics remotely to a single rendering queue for delivery to a post-production editing platform.

In addition to on-screen graphics, deltatre is also providing auxiliary services for Premier League Productions’ international broadcast feeds including a Commentator Information Service. deltatre’s web-based CIS is driven by data fed from Magma and provides global commentators covering Premier League matches with live statistics for each game.
